This lesson was the first in a mini music unit. Due to COVID and lack of access to computers, students weren't able to play instruments. Instead, the lessons focused on fundamental ideas and questions about what music is, what qualifies as music, and is all sound music? Musical examples were provided to evoke emotion and discussion.

Students felt particularly strongly about Pierre Boulez's composition. They were encouraged to explain why they didn't like something instead of simply stating "I don't like it" or "it's too loud." All art is supposed to evoke emotion, good, bad, and in between. This lesson gave students a chance to critically listen to musical pieces and tie emotional responses to musical structure.
